How Can I Go On?

Overcoming a heartache or heartbreak is something that is probably harder for me than a broken bone or the chronic pain I live with on a daily basis. It is something that just knocks you out for what seems like will be forever. It is that emotional aching in your chest that happens when you are deeply disappointed or grieved over a life circumstance or death.

God says this about our broken hearts;

The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit -Psalms 34:18

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever- Psalms 73:26

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Psalm 147:3

God does talk a lot about a broken heart because this world is cruel and we will experience a wounded heart one too many times in our earthly life.  While we are in the midst of a situation that has crushed our spirit, body and soul we can look to God for comfort for He is the comforter but that does not always mean He will deliver us out of the heartbreak but it does mean that He will carry us through it while we lean on Him.

I know that isn’t much comfort when we are crushed in spirit and emptied of all our strength and feel like we can’t make it through another day.

I read this  “Leave the broken, irreversible past in God’s hands, and step out into the invincible future with Him.” ~ Oswald Chambers

Sometimes thats what faith will do for us, leaving behind the hurt and pain after we have grieved knowing God is still not finished with us as long as we are on this earth.

“Your most profound and intimate experiences of worship will likely be in your darkest days – when your heart is broken, when you feel abandoned, when your out of options, when the pain is great – and you turn to God alone.” ~ Rick Warren

Pastor Rick Warren lost his own son from suicide and he wrote this because he had lived this out and experienced it.  When it is the hardest to worship God we are in a place of broken surrender, it is in those times that we are the closet to God that we can be.

Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good. 1 Peter 4:19

Finally, those who belong to Christ and are enduring heartbreak must know that God loves them and that His love is unconditional. Imagine the grief God the Father endured as He witnessed the crucifixion of His Son on the cross. What amazing love! That same God is there to comfort the brokenhearted and restore the joy of their salvation.

I pray for all of us in every heart breaking situation we may be in that the God of Peace and comfort wrap His loving, healing and life changing arms around us and give us rest. Let us learn to trust in the God of Love to mend the broken pieces of our hearts and in time we will rise and bring healing to others through our own pain and recovery.
